About the STI Detection Unit
In July 2014, Public Health England published a report expressing concern over the explosion in rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), with 446,253 new cases diagnosed in 2013 alone [https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads...]. As part of an initiative to counter the rising epidemic of STIs, the STI Detection Unit was created.

Making use of dogs’ incredible sense of smell, the unit trains ex-service dogs to detect 10 of the most commonly occurring infections in the general public. Notably, the unit cannot detect HIV. After a person has been identified as having a potential infection, they are referred for specialist treatment.

It is hoped that the presence of the unit will encourage the public to take greater care of their sexual health, for example by having regular STI tests.
